Ear Infections

Ear infections (Otitis Media) are very common in young children. Approximately 75% of all children will suffer from an ear infection before they are three years old. These infections begin as the result of a common cold, sore throat, or respiratory infection.

Causes of Ear Infection

Ear infections are caused by a blockage of the eustachian tube, which runs from the middle ear to the throat. The eustachian tube drains fluid from the middle ear, and blockages in that tube prevent normal drainage of fluid from behind the ear drum. The fluid then becomes a stagnant pool in which bacteria or viruses thrive.

The eustachian tube can become blocked when a cold or allergy leads to swelling of the nose, throat, and eustachian tube itself.

  • Pulling or tugging at one or both ears

  • Hearing problems

  • Fluid draining from ears

Frequently Asked Questions

Let’s take a moment to discuss the answers to some commonly asked questions about ear infections and chiropractic care from our Lehi chiropractor.

Do I Need to See a Doctor to Treat an Ear Infection?

It is best to seek professional medical care to diagnose ear infections that last more than three days. Cashel Chiropractic and Dr. Rob have the education, skills, tools, and experience to accurately diagnose and treat your child’s ear infection pain.

How Long Will an Ear Infection Last?

With proper diagnosis, treatment, and rehab, ear infections may require only a few days to heal. The sooner this condition is properly diagnosed and treated and rehab is begun, the sooner one can return to full activity. Book an appointment with Dr. Rob, and get your feet on the road to recovery.

Why Does My Child Keep Getting Ear Infections?

Children are more likely to experience ear infections because their immune systems are not fully developed and are not as effective in fighting infections. Additionally, children’s eustachian tubes are smaller and more horizontal, making it more difficult for fluid to drain out of the ear.
