Symptoms of Whiplash
Following a whiplash event, the symptoms an individual may experience are varied and numerous. You may experience one or more of the following symptoms, which are indicative of whiplash injury:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Worsening of pain with neck movement
- Loss of range of motion in the neck
- Headaches, most often starting at the base of the skull
- Tenderness or pain in the shoulder, upper back, or arms
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Other less common symptoms can include blurred vision, ringing in the ears, irritability, sleep disturbance, memory problems, and depression.
It is not uncommon for people who have whiplash to be unaware that they even have a problem.
It is critical, regardless of the severity of any auto accident or other neck trauma, that you schedule an immediate examination to identify, diagnose, document, and begin treatment for any injuries you may have sustained.
What Should I Expect During My Whiplash Assessment?
Dr. Rob will carefully listen to your concerns and review your full medical history with you.
This will be followed by observation of your posture and range of motion.
Then, the doctor will palpate (feel) your full spine to determine if there is any muscle-tendon injury or vertebral displacement.
If warranted, digital imaging (X-ray, MRI, or CAT scan) may be ordered to ensure any undetected spine, shoulder, or neck injury is identified and documented.
Finally, using the findings gathered from the steps above, our Lehi chiropractor will determine a comprehensive, scientifically based, effective, and efficient treatment plan tailored to achieve your individual’s health and recovery goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
These are some of the answers to the most commonly asked questions we receive:
If I Have No Symptoms, Does This Mean I Don't Have Whiplash?
Even if your neck feels okay, delayed symptoms may later arise. Immediate evaluation will ensure that any injuries are detected, documented, and treated promptly.
My Auto Accident Was at a Slow Speed Can I Delay Seeking Chiropractic Assessment and Treatment?
Don’t assume that your accident was “not serious enough” to cause whiplash. A vehicle traveling at just a few miles per hour can transfer enough force to the neck and spine to cause serious injury.
How Will Cashel Chiropractic Treat Whiplash?
Dr. Rob will only use treatments that are non-invasive in nature and require no medication to obtain quick and effective pain relief. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your personal needs and recovery goals. This could include spinal adjustments, application of cold or heat to the affected area, electric stimulation to get muscles moving, massage therapy, and exercises of the neck muscles.
