TMJ & TMD

TMJ is an acronym for temporomandibular joint. The two temporomandibular joints, located on both sides of your head, connect your lower jaw to your skull. When the TMJ are properly aligned, they work very well, allowing your lower jaw to move up and down, in and out, and side to side. When functioning properly, the TMJ enables you to talk, chew, and yawn.

When the TMJs are not aligned or synchronized in their movement, this can result in numerous different problems. These conditions are known as temporomandibular dysfunction or TMD.

TMD is very common and recent studies indicate that more than 10 million people in the U.S. live with TMD pain and dysfunction.

Causes of TMD

The following are risk factors that can lead to TMD:

  • Bruxism or teeth clenching or grinding
  • Trauma to the head neck or jaw
  • Arthritis in the TMJ
  • Stress
  • An improper bite

Symptoms of TMD

The following are symptoms of TMD:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Aching pain in or around one or both ears
  • Pain while chewing
  • Jaws that lock in the open or closed position
  • Pain in the neck or shoulders
  • Changes in the way that teeth fit together
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth
  • Headaches
  • Tooth pain

If warranted, digital imaging (X-ray, MRI, or CT scan) may be ordered.
